Saul (Sael) Falikof was born in Tarutino village, Bessarabia. His father Moses Falikof left family when Saul was two years old (in 1914). Saul gratuated from Iasi (Iaşi, Jassy) University (oldest Romanian university, opened by Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza Alexandru Ioan Cuza. While being student, he with his mohter visited his father once in USA. Moses offered Saul to stay but only without mom and Saul opt to stay with mother and leave US. Once graduated, he moved to Buharest, later to Vienna While traveling, he met his first wife Lika, and funded by her father, he was able to open his own fully equiped medical office and start practicing. Lika was pregnant when the World War II started. Leaving Romania, which overnight became antisemitic state and joined Germany, Saul swam cross the Dnestr river, pulling his wife and some immediate medical instruments. Later, his mother Rosa and sister Dvoira arrived to Russia and joined Saul and Lika in Mineralnue Vodi City (Minvodi). They all got into local getto and one time, while Saul went to Kislovodsk in search for job, germans shot Dvoira and Rosa dead (what happened with Lika is unknown, possibly shot too). Saul ran away and joined russian military forces to fight germans. Not only he was a great doctor, he also spoke seven languages which helped him to assimilate. Besides Romanian and Russian, he also spoke French, Spanish, German, Portugal and English. In 1944 he met Galina (she was 18 and he was 32) and 2 years later they had a daughter Susan (1946), while still being in Kislovodsk. Later (1948) they went to Monino, where Saul was assigned to manage rebuilding of a local hospital (overseen by VCSPS). When Stalin's "Doctors case" started in 1949, Saul didn't wait for arrest and moved far away from the capital - to Crimea. Initially in Evpatoria and later to Livadia. Only years later Falikofs family went back to Moscow. New assignment for Saul was to build Central Republican Hospital. Once hospital was built, Saul remained working there till he died. His last position was director of neuro-physiology laboratory. he was researching encephalography. Saul had doctorate from Romania, among his private clients in Russia were Arkady Raikin ( |
